TCC would like to thank the voters of Tiverton for their strong support in the last election. Tiverton’s new leadership enjoys a mix of experience and varied, new talents—a development we see as a plus. It will infuse the group dynamic with new ideas and solutions, to everyone’s benefit. Advocating a productive and broad-based approach to governance, we encourage all town officials to keep the focus on cooperation and energetic engagement.
TCC’s mission statement compels us to monitor and engage town government on behalf of the citizens of Tiverton. We perceive our role as advocacy in the public square of issues and concerns affecting the entire community. Here are a few thoughts based upon that understanding. Tiverton’s new-look administration has four serious challenges ahead:
- 1. Steering through the deepening economic crisis
- 2. Improving student performance
- 3. Managing the town’s development
- 4. Maintaining core municipal services
This economic crisis is not of our causing, but we must create and implement a plan to address it. Strong leadership is imperative; we need to make hard decisions while preserving our core needs. We must help our students achieve more, even as we maintain crucial municipal operations.
With many families in distress, this is not a time to raise taxes. The town must spend what it can afford and no more, with any new spending accompanied by budget-impact statements.
It is not contradictory to declare that TCC strongly supports quality education. To us, this means understanding the difference between spending more and achieving more. The former creates the illusion of an investment, while the latter improves the quality of the education that our students actually receive. Let’s agree that our yardstick for success is measured achievement, not higher spending.
We share parents’ concerns about the futures of their children. Here are four areas of education focus that make sense:
- 1. Set high academic standards for all students, supported by a rigorous curriculum
- 2. Improve the quality of teaching in our classrooms, supported by higher compensation for our best teachers
- 3. Measure student and teacher performance on a systematic basis, supported by tests and assessments
- 4. Increase “time on task” for all students, meaning more time in school each day and a longer school year
Finally, it is disappointing to see some ascribe a nefarious hidden agenda to TCC. Impugning a fictitious motive with nothing but conjecture is divisive and destructive, and it’s a millstone we will not bear. Whether through misunderstanding or malicious intent, it has the effect of dividing and diverting Tiverton’s trajectory toward a shared vision. We promise to stay on message and treat our neighbors with respect and will give those with whom we disagree every opportunity to do the same.
